South Dakota

South Dakota, July 26, 2010

I drove almost the entire width of the state, from east to west along Highway 18, through the Yankton, Rosebud and Pine Ridge Indian Reservations (and then up to Sturgis.) I stopped at Wounded Knee (at Pine Ridge) as it was getting dark and stood on a small bluff overlooking the hills and ravines where the Indian massacre happened in 1890. I met a really cool local on the bluff who told me about the history of Wounded Knee and things currently going on there.

I stopped for a beer near the R-Bar in Vetal, SD. And once you get west of about a town called Winner on Highway 18 you better have plenty of gas because there ain’t many stations the farther west you go!
