I ate my way across the continent. It was fun. Here’s the best stuff:
A strawberry-banana split on a Belgian waffle at the Cherry Street Grille, Vermillion, South Dakota 7-26-10
I had a killer Turkey-Pastrami sandwich in St. Louis. And if you go to the Gateway city go to Pi, a great pizza joint, and get the thin-crust Lincoln Park. It was excellent, complete with Mozzarella and Zucchini.
Toasted raviolis at Rigazzis, St. Louis, MO
Wyandot Diner, Kansas City, KS
Amazing ribs. And simply, appropriately called on the menu the “Rib Dinner.”
Hood River, OR 8-3-10
I had dinner at the Big Horse Brew Pub. Their Tri-Tip Organic Beef Skewers with Teriyaki ginger and Thai peanut soba noodles was excellent, along with their Greek Spinach Salad. I drank a Kentucky Common Sour Mashed Brown ale that definitely had some kick to it and took a little getting used to. If I wasn’t so tired from driving I would have drank another (and another!) because at 6.3% alcohol content you can’t go wrong! And the restaurant is up on a hill and has a great view of the river and mountains.
Portland, OR 8-30-10
I had dinner with my cousins at the Bridgeport Brew Pub and it was delicious. I had the Salmon Melt on a sourdough roll.
Port Alberni, Vancouver Island (BC)
The best restaurant in town is The Clam Bucket. Their clam chowder with garlic toast is great, along with meals like Prawns in a Greek salad.
Tofino, Vancouver Island (BC)
Tough City for great sushi including the Yam roll. There’s a piece of Yam tempura on top of each roll – yum!
Tony’s Crab Shack for crab sandwiches. The fish and chips place next door for, well, umm, err fish and chips! Bandon Bill’s restaurant in the Best Western at Face Rock hotel for an excellent salmon dinner.
Port Orford, OR
The Crazy Norwegians for fish and chips.
Some pizza joint that I can’t remember the name of, on the same street as a bookstore, had a great Mediterranean slice, huge with tons of stuff on it. The Plaza Grill for a great seafood dinner. Arcata gets real foggy easily!
